A few weeks back I met up with one of my favorite wedding planners, Lauren Schmidt of The Creative Touch, Events by Lauren, for coffee to just chat about all weddings. Well our focus was on wedding trends and what will be popular for this coming year. And boy did I learn a lot and I’m super excited to see some of the trends.
When your brides look at venues, what are they looking for?
A lot of my brides are looking for unique venues that at least begin to tell the story of their vision. They also want to be able to transform the space to make it uniquely their own. Regardless of their style (rustic, garden, modern, etc), they still want the feeling of classy & elegant. My brides want their guests to feel taken care of and they want everyone to have a fun time. So selecting the right space for all of this is important.
What colors can we expect to see in 2013?
Emerald green is the color of the year so I expect to see that a lot. Purple is still a really popular color, but more of the subtle tones like lavender; not the rich purples of years past. I’m also seeing grey tones, ivory, champagne, jade and pale pinks. Just very subdued, soft colors.
So we know that flowers and linens can really help transform a space. What can we expect to see this year in terms of that?
I see lots of textures popping up and linens having fun patterns like the chevron pattern that is gaining popularity. In floral, I’m seeing a more organic feel to bouquets and centerpieces; not as much of the rounded, pave look. They are going for a more whimsical feel using a lot more greenery mixed with flowers. I’m also seeing a lot natural woods and metallics incorporated into the décor.
Here are some photos I took of a tablescape Lauren styled. This really does incorporate these trends and gives you a visual of what Lauren mentioned above.
Ok so we have covered the trends, how has a planner do you help them plan the wedding they envisioned?
I take the ideas my couples have and we do a lot of brainstorming and looking at different images or inspirations. From this, different ideas start to evolve that are more of what the bride truly wants. Changes will occur throughout the planning process and it’s my job to make sure they all flow & keep with the vision the bride has. The design really is a team effort.
Right now, Pinterest is also a tool a lot of my brides use and we can create inspiration boards to utilize.
I always like to know, what is your favorite moment on wedding day.
I love it when the bride and groom can see the reception room before all the guests enter. They can see what all the months of planning has created and they get to see what they envisioned come to life. I get brides that get so emotional and it brings tears to their eyes. So naturally I start tearing up to. It’s so great to be able to make their dreams a reality.
