Ok I’ve Scheduled my Engagement Session, now what?

Ok on the heels of our last post, this is going to be a FAQ on how to have the best engagement session ever.  I know some couples can book their session and then start to get nervous or think what do I do now.  Will the pictures come out ok?  Where do we go? etc, etc, etc.  So as a photographer, I’m going to try and help out a bit to calm your nerves.

Where do we go?

What I ask all my clients is, do you have a special place that means something to you and your fiance?  That place can be where you two met, where he proposed.  Or it can just be somewhere you always walk your dog, or in general just like.  The reason I ask this is because I want your engagement session to be meaningful to YOU!!

You might be thinking, well I can’t think of anywhere.  Really no worries.  I have a ton of locations that I can suggest to you.  Your photographer should know of locations around the area.  It’s why you hire us, right.  You trust our vision.

What do I wear?

This can be a tough one for us girls.  Do I look ok in this? Does this make me look fat?  Every girl goes through this.  My advice is to avoid bright, neon colors.  From experience, they just don’t translate well on camera.  Try to pick jewel colors, your rich dark blues, greens, reds.  Black is also very slimming and can be very sophisticated.  Plus ladies, we all have that little black dress, right?  Or you can go with very soft pastels.  Something a little more subtle.

Another thing to avoid is small patterns and stripes.  This again just doesn’t translate well on film.

My couples well normally do a change of outfits.  So one is casual and one is more formal/dressy.  But even with the dressy pictures, have fun with it.  Wear some really funky, cool shoes.  It adds some flair and personality to your pictures.  Don’t be afraid to be stylish!! We love that!!

So what does he wear so we look like a couple?

He does not have to wear the exact same color as you.  You don’t have to be matchy matchy.  You could both wear blue but in different shades.   Just really look for outfits that compliment each other.

What should we do in front of the camera?

HAVE FUN!!!  Seriously, just have fun!!  I want you to be natural.  I want to capture the true love that exists between you two. I know its there because you two are getting married.  Don’t be afraid to laugh.  And above all, just be yourselves.  I want you to look back at your pictures in 5, 10, 20 years and say, they really captured us.  Don’t be afraid to be silly with each other.  All I ask is that you be you and that is what will translate best.

If you have any other questions regarding your engagement pictures, leave a comment here (I might add it to this post) or email me at kandsphoto at gmail dot com.
