One year ago today, the Supreme Court of the United States made a landmark ruling, all states (Texas included) must recognize LGBTQ weddings. It was a win for love and for equality. It was a fantastic day!!! Same sex couples could now marry the person they love across the U.S. I was so happy for our couples married before June 26, 2015 now had their marriages recognized by the state of Texas. It allowed couples who previously had a domestic partnership, to get their marriage license in Texas and hold their wedding in their home state. Words can’t even describe how huge this is for the LGBTQ community. As an ally, I wanted to not just Facebook post about my support but take what action I could to show my support. I figured, well hey you are a wedding photographer here in Dallas, why not grab your camera and head down to the Dallas courthouse and take photos for the couples getting married. They need a keepsake not only their wedding day, but on this historic day. You can see those photos here.
I’m posting this here too as a way to show that love is going to win out, always. Even though the wake of the Orlando shooting, where I read post after post where it shook my family and friends were shook to their core, I want them to know your allies- we are here for you. We love you and your love is no different than my love for my husband. Don’t stop holding hands, don’t stop kissing, your love is a beautiful thing.
We are all blessed to walk through this life with the person we love. It’s a powerful thing and I know it sounds cheesy, but I photograph weddings because I truly believe in the power of love. It’s special thing to find that person that “gets you” and loves you for all your quirks. So please join me in wishing all a Happy Anniversary for marriage equality.
