So it’s time for something a little different and not wedding related for today’s blog post, some of the street photography I do. This is just a random sampling of my street photography, but I wanted to share 🙂 Some of these might have been seen already if you follow me on Instagram. If you are interested in following my user name is shauna_b. These images were taken in various places and I will do a small explanation for each image so you can see my thought process behind them. One of the reason’s I love street photography though, is that I can pick up a camera with one lens, no flash, no lighting equipment, nothing but me and a good pair of walking shoes. It really teaches me to anticipate the moment and to catch it in an instant, which really does help when it comes to catching those fleeting moments on wedding day. 🙂 See, I am tying this back to weddings, I can’t help it. 🙂 Ok, so here are some of the images.
This image was taken in Deep Ellum last week after it had rained all day and mist/fog was rolling in. I always have my husband with me when I am taking photos in downtown. I get so caught up in the moment sometimes that I need a good bodyguard to make sure no one tries to snatch my camera. So we were walking down Main St in Dallas, and Ray had to peer into the window of Taboo Tattoo. I snapped the photo really quickly and we moved on. I didn’t tell him I took this until I posted it on his Facebook wall. He was kinda a photo bomber, but it really made the image I think.
I took this image while in New York in May. I was there to photography Ada’s wedding and spend a few extra days there with my parents over the Memorial Day Holiday. My parent’s insisted on seeing the city by going on the big red touristy bus. I fought them on it because didn’t want to see the city zooming past everything, but it was a 2 to 1 vote so I lost out. We were waiting line for what seemed like ever. The woman behind me was with her husband and 2 kids and she started to get frustrated and was passing back and forth looking for the bus. I understood her frustration, but I was a bit calmer and just stood there. Eventually, I got the courage to just take this woman’s photograph which was probably at the height of her annoyance for the long wait.
This image was also taken on the big touristy bus in New York City. It was Harbour Week while we were there, so sailors had swarmed NYC. We had 2 on the top of the bus with us. I have always admired those that serve their country because I come from a military family. My Dad graduated from Annapolis, my Uncle served in both Gulf Wars and I my Grandfather served in the Korean war. So I have a huge respect for anyone military. I wanted to take their photo but hestiated. As they were getting off the bus, I had my camera in my lap and pointed it up at them and snapped a couple of unobtrusive photos.
This was again in New York and the same line we were standing in for the bus. I saw this guy walking along the street and I saw the movie poster above. It looked like the two just belong together and needed to be recorded in a photograph. I don’t think this gentleman saw me or if he did, I wasn’t acknowledged. Plus, you have to love the old school Fedora.
This was taken in Downtown Dallas in October I believe. I was at a point after my fibroid removal surgery where I could walk about a mile but slowly. I rounded the corner and saw this older gentlemen. His cane and his attire really spoke to me as he looked very classy. I know some have seen this photo as sad because he is by himself. I however see strength in this image. He is out walking around the city and for all I know he was meeting a friend for lunch. When I look at his face I can only imagine the stories he must tell.
Ok so this one is a bit of a cheater but don’t judge me. That is my husband on the left side of the frame. I saw this sign on a garage door and it begged to be photograph. But it needed a bit more interest to it. I have always loved the juxtaposition of photographs and told my husband to park it in the corner next to the No Parking sign. ( I know it’s a bad joke, but I couldn’t resist.)
This was also in Dallas on the same raining/foggy night as before. It wasn’t completely foggy but you could see it start to form. We walked by this empty lot in Deep Ellum and I saw this billboard with no writing on it. There was a light behind it that made the whole scene have this interesting feel to it. And the street lights caused the bars to cast shadows onto the road. It seemed eery and creepy but alluring at the same time.
Ray and I were walking down Main or Elm in Deep Ellum, I’m not really sure which street it was. I love how the roads look after it rains and they reflect the light around them. When this car pulled up to the light I instantly snapped the photo. I didn’t think to much on this one but just grabbed the shot before the moment slipped away. Only later did I see the two guys in the background framed by the cars. I really love when a photograph surprises you with little elements such as that.
Ok and last but not least. I was in Austin for a day for SXSW and was photographing musicians on stage but I was really more intrigued with those walking down Sixth Street enjoying the festival. At one point I just stood in the middle of the street and photographed those walking towards me. I’m short so I guess it seemed unassuming to everyone or maybe they were just used to it. The wind has blown her skirt to the side as she was sweeping the hair behind her ear and I quickly took the photograph. If I had thought about it too long, that moment would have been gone.
Let me know what you think. Did you like to hear a bit of backstory? I appreciate those that read the blog and bear with me. I’m not a writer my nature but I try and that’s what matters right 🙂
