It’s hard to believe its been 10 years since that day. I will never forget where I was the moment I heard the news, as I’m sure many of you will always remember exactly where you were and what you were doing that day. The emotions of the day still flood back like it was yesterday. 9/11 certainly changed the world forever.
I was 19 years old and in my Sophomore year of college at the local community college (getting those basics out of the way). It was a Tuesday and I was getting ready to go to my Astronomy class. I was living at home at the time. Every morning as my mom got ready for work, she had on The Today Show. Suddenly my mom yelled at me from her room that a plane hit the Word Trade Center in New York, I ran into her room. Watched the smoke billow from the building, but my first thought was some crazy person with a small private plane who lost control and hit the tower. I go back to getting ready and my mom yells there is another plane, I run back in, quick enough to see it plow into the 2nd tower. I’m in disbelief!!!!!! I’m shocked!!!!! I realized then that we were under some kind of attack.
I was a diligent student though and drove to school. I had this class with Ray and was so happy to see him. Class started and all of us tried to tell the professor we, the USA, was under attack. He didn’t believe us and continued with class, he obviously didn’t turn on the TV, radio, etc that morning. It was so hard to pay attention and I honestly don’t think I heard a word he said that day. Class ended and I remember seeing TV’s rolled out into the hallways so we could all stand in horror as news of the Pentagon being hit was broad-casted along with the crash of United Flight 93. The college scrambled and made hot dogs for everyone that day. Ray and I watched for a little bit and then headed to Lab. Our professor believed us at this point and cancelled lab. Ray and I hightailed it over to my house and stayed glued to the TV the rest of the day. I cried and cried and cried as I watched. The mood through my house that night was somber. My dad let us know he knew someone on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. I think the next few days everyone was just shocked and dazed and the events that had occurred on September 11, 2011. A day that will never be forgotten.
Let’s all pray for those that lost their lives that day and their families. Let’s remember the heros of that day, the firefighters and the police, the heroic actions of those on Flight 93, and the shift actions of those that helped save lives. Ok wow the tears aren’t stopping so I’m not sure how much more I can write.
I would love to hear from you, please share where you were on 9/11, your thoughts, etc.
We shall never forget
We shall keep this day,
We shall keep the events and the tears
In our minds, our memory and our hearts
and take them with us as we carry on.
