The Wonders of Homemade Pasta

Ray and I had been talking about getting a pasta maker for quite awhile now and then my mom packed hers up and bought it when she came and my dad and brother came from Christmas.  We knew we wanted one for sure but again it got put on the back burner.  Then the other day we walked Oil and Vinegar, a new store that had opened close to where we live.  They had one pasta maker left, I think it was meant to be.  So of course when we get home, my husband is all giddy because he sees it as a new toy and wanted to use it right away.  So like the good Italian wife I am, I whipped up some homemade pasta.  I know my Grandma was looking down on me with the biggest smile and so proud her granddaughter was making pasta. I was having so much fun to, well once I got past the tough part of kneading the dough.

In case anyone is interested, here is the recipe I used from the Food Network.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 4 extra-large eggs

Directions

Mound the flour in the center of a large wooden cutting board. Make a well in the middle of the flour, add the eggs. Using a fork, beat together the eggs and begin to incorporate the flour starting with the inner rim of the well. As you incorporate the eggs, keep pushing the flour up to retain the well shape (do not worry if it looks messy). The dough will come together in a shaggy mass when about half of the flour is incorporated.

Start kneading the dough with both hands, primarily using the palms of your hands. Add more flour, in 1/2-cup increments, if the dough is too sticky. Once the dough is a cohesive mass, remove the dough from the board and scrape up any left over dry bits. Lightly flour the board and continue kneading for 3 more minutes. The dough should be elastic and a little sticky. Continue to knead for another 3 minutes, remembering to dust your board with flour when necessary. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and set aside for 20 minutes at room temperature. Roll and form as desired.

Note: Do not skip the kneading or resting portion of this recipe, they are essential for a light pasta

Oh and I waited until after lunch as to not make anyone hungry because it was sooo good!!!!!!!

If anyone has any tips or things they have made, feel free to share :)

How Photographers achieve that soft, glowing skin.

I don’t even know where to begin with this post.  I will just warn that this is what happens when photographers get together to practice different lighting techniques.  Things just spiral until a crazy photo-shoot manifests and spouses are caught in the crossfire.  So this is the brain child that Humza of Humza Yasin Photography and I came up with last night.  Thanks so much to my husband Ray and Humza’s wife Jabeen for putting up with our craziness.  Oh and I should talk about the inspiration for the shoot.  We wanted to reveal a secret us professional photographers have kept under lock and key.  Yep I’m divulging it here today.  I am sharing with you how to get that soft subtle glowing skin that professional photographers get.  You may have heard it referred to as buttery, like oooh her skin just looks so buttery.  Well take a look at the pictures and discover our little secret :)

So the picture below on the right is the final picture.  Doesn’t his skin look so buttery smooth and soft :)

And here is Jabeen’s before and after.  Now that you get the process hahaha

Oh and disclaimer, we do not actually spray any of our subjects with Pam Cooking Spray or put butter on their faces, these are mearly fun, goofy photos.  Only our spouses get this glorious treatment :)

New Orleans Street Photography Part 4

This is my 4th and final post about New Orleans. Kinda bittersweet as I have loved sharing these images with you.  The focus of this blog is the street performers of the French Quarter.  I love watching street performers and I think they breath life into a city, plus some are extremely talented.

So here is part 2 my New Orleans Trip.  I won’t be so wordy this time :)  Oh and if you are interested in any of these pictures, I do have them online and available for purchase, click here

I always love listening to the violin and these 2 were chalked full of talent.  They played Let It Be and that is one of my all time favorite songs so I had to listen and I was almost in tears it was that good.

There was a group of break dancers and we stopped to watch them.  This one was a ham and was getting everyone to stop and come watch.  He really hammed it up for my camera so just know he wasn’t angry at all, just making faces :)
